16 Years of LGBT Voice Tanzania: Still Here. Still Fighting.

In 2009, a small group of LGBTQ+ activists in Tanzania made a bold and dangerous decision:
To exist.
To organize.
To speak out—when the world told them to stay silent.

That decision became the beginning of LGBT Voice Tanzania.

Today, we mark 16 years since that courageous step. Sixteen years of working at the frontlines of queer survival in a country where being LGBTQ+ is still criminalized, vilified, and misunderstood.

What We’ve Built

Over the past 16 years, we have:

  • Provided emergency shelter and psychosocial support to LGBTQ+ youth in crisis

  • Created safe spaces for healing and community

  • Supported mental health peer programs and suicide prevention outreach

  • Fought for justice through legal support and advocacy

  • Amplified the stories of those who cannot speak publicly for fear of violence

We’ve done all this with limited resources, constant threats, and under the weight of stigma. And yet—we are still here.

Why We Continue

Because every day, someone reaches out to us and says:

“I have no one else to turn to.”
“I’m afraid of being hurt or arrested.”
“Can you help me stay alive?”

And we answer: Yes. We see you. We are with you.

What This Anniversary Means

This 16-year milestone is not just a celebration.
It is a declaration.

A declaration that we have survived.
That we are building a future grounded in dignity, love, and liberation.
That despite every attempt to silence us—we remain loud in purpose, even if quiet in voice.
