INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 2025

Equality Is Non-Negotiable — A Call for Action in Tanzania

Today, the world commemorates International Human Rights Day, a global moment to reaffirm the dignity and equal rights of every person. For LGBTQ+ people in Tanzania, this day carries a profound truth: our identities, our safety, and our right to exist are not up for negotiation. Equality is non-negotiable.

Human Rights Under Threat in Tanzania

As we move through 2025, LGBTQ+ Tanzanians continue to face widespread human rights violations. Reports from across the country highlight escalating acts of discrimination: unlawful arrests, violent attacks, hostile evictions, blackmail, digital harassment, and denial of essential services such as healthcare and education.

These abuses persist because discriminatory laws and harmful social narratives continue to justify violence and exclusion. Tanzania cannot meaningfully commit to human rights while allowing systems that criminalize, silence, and endanger LGBTQ+ citizens.

On this day, we urge policymakers and national institutions to confront these realities with honesty and action. Human rights must apply to all Tanzanians, not just some.

Our Work in 2025: Defending Lives, Advancing Justice

In 2025, LGBT Voice Tanzania is strengthening its commitment to community protection and policy change. Building on our past successes, we are expanding efforts across several key areas:

  • We are offering enhanced legal support to LGBTQ+ individuals facing arrest, violence, or discrimination — ensuring access to justice and rights information.

  • We are scaling up psychosocial support and emergency response, including safe relocation for individuals under immediate threat.

  • We continue to deliver digital safety and advocacy training, empowering community members to protect themselves in an increasingly hostile online environment.

  • Our research and ongoing documentation of abuses inform policy recommendations and advocacy campaigns aimed at long-term reform.

  • Through collaboration with national and international partners, we are strengthening accountability mechanisms to protect LGBTQ+ lives.

These efforts reflect not only our mission, but also the resilience of every LGBTQ+ Tanzanian who continues to demand dignity in the face of adversity.

A Policy-Driven Call to Action

As we commemorate International Human Rights Day 2025, we urgently call on stakeholders to take decisive action:

  • Repeal discriminatory laws that criminalize LGBTQ+ existence and fuel violence.

  • End arbitrary arrests and ensure law enforcement adheres to human rights principles.

  • Strengthen national protection systems to respond effectively to sexuality- and gender-based violence.

  • Ensure equal access to healthcare, housing, employment, and education for all citizens.

  • Create inclusive national policies that recognize and involve LGBTQ+ communities in decision-making processes.

Human rights cannot be selectively applied. Equality must be at the center of Tanzania’s path forward.

Stand With Us — Take Action Today

The fight for human rights requires collective courage. On this International Human Rights Day, we call on:

  • Individuals to speak up, challenge discrimination, and amplify LGBTQ+ voices.

  • Civil society organizations to strengthen solidarity and joint advocacy.

  • Donors and partners to continue supporting community-led protection and policy work.

  • Regional and global allies to hold Tanzania accountable to its human rights commitments.

Human rights are universal. Equality is non-negotiable — and together, we will continue pushing for a Tanzania where every LGBTQ+ person can live free, safe, and proud.
